World Book Day is more than just dressing up and having fun, it’s also the world’s biggest campaign to provide every child and young person in the country with a book of their own.

Books allow us to experience the greatest adventures imaginable, such as flying spaceships, being a superhero or being the world’s most genius scientist as well as learning about the world and what’s right and wrong.

With World Book Day fast approaching the best way to get the kids in your class involved is to dress up as a character from a book and fully immerse yourself in the role. It’s a great opportunity to encourage pupils to read more and explore other possibilities and ideas.

Mary Poppins

Mary Poppins is a great costume for World Book Day as she teaches children so many valuable life lessons. For example, there are no limits to the imagination, to help parents do chores around the house and that laughter is often the best medicine. The costume is also fairly simple to replicate and you can probably use some items that you already own, such as a black mid length skirt and white shirt. For the final touches, wear a black bowler hat, red necktie and white gloves.

 

The BFG

The BFG is a great story about friendship and learning not to judge someone based on their appearance, as although the BFG may look big and scary, he’s actually very kind and gentle. The classic Roald Dahl story also teaches children to never underestimate themselves and their abilities. This costume is also fairly simple to make and includes green trousers, a white shirt, waistcoat and a headband with large paper ears attached.

 

Rainbow Fish

The Rainbow Fish is a beautifully illustrated book that simply explores the idea that sharing with others makes us happier and that we should should treat others with kindness. The costume may require some time assembling and crafting. Cut out pink, purple, light blue and silver fabric scales and glue, sew or staple them to a turquoise T shirt, to make the body of the rainbow fish. The Paper Bag Princess puts a spin on the classic fairytale of a princess in need of rescuing as the princess in this story rescues the prince. There are so many lessons to be learned from this book and the costume will help you introduce the themes from the book into the classroom. The story teaches us that your intelligence is your greatest asset, not your looks or strength and that your self worth shouldn’t be defined by someone else. For the outfit, use either a large paper potato sack turned inside out or thick brown parcel paper to create the costume. Simply tape the sides together and cut out head and arm holes. For the finishing touch, wear a gold crown.

 

Peter Rabbit

Peter Rabbit is a classic adventure and danger story that truly demonstrates that you reap what you sow. This is a great lesson for children as it teaches us to face the consequences of our actions as well as never giving up on our dreams no matter how big they seem or how difficult things become. Peter Rabbit’s costume is fairly easy to create and includes brown trousers, a cream top, blue jacket or blazer and rabbit ears.
