I wanted to become a Parent School Governor to give back to the local community I live in. I’m interested in Education professionally and now that I have a child in pre school and another in KS1, it has become something of a personal matter too.

What I enjoy about being a Parent Governor:

  • I have found it to be a really good way to volunteer the skills I have developed from my career and also a fantastic way to learn new skills which I hope will support me.
  • Challenging and asking questions of the schools Leadership Team brings a different way of thinking which I take with me to my current role.
  • Looking at new and innovative ways of improving education for pupils is something I want to be a part of.

We have a diverse group of Governors at the school with different backgrounds which supports effective debate – something all schools require to ensure strong governance. Being a Governor is interesting in terms of the work you do as well as rewarding. For every difficult subject discussed or decision made, you are helping to make a positive change.

For me the most enjoyable element is being on site at school and seeing the pupils learning and the progress being made. This was evident when I recently visited the EYFS Unit within school and I got to see all of the different classroom stations set up, some real imagination had been put in. The pupils were engaged in learning and play. It was an exciting environment for the pupils to be in.

Another example was when we were asked to support the school with a Jubilee Festival. This for me, included cake tasting. A minor part to play but to see the effort of all the pupils and parents had put in to making the cakes, and what a good job the school had done with engaging pupils to take part in a school community event was great to see. A simple but effective way to encourage involvement.

The next meeting I have scheduled as Parent Governor is a Health and Safety site inspection, as we all know school premises are valuable recourses and with the use of the facilities being increasingly used for extended services, this is an important function for the governors to undertake and be a part of… as I head into the land of Health and Safety.

Being a Parent Governor is an exciting journey to be on and I look forward to working with the school further.
