Whenever I meet someone new, catchup with a friend or see my family, I always get asked the same the questions: “What do you do for a living?”, “how’s work?”, “what’s your role in the company?”

When I explain that I’m a Brand Communications Coordinator, the most common response is “a what?”, and sometimes I find it easier just to say that I’m a marketer. But when asked about what I do as a marketer, I sometimes find myself asking the same thing. I always have a busy schedule with an endless to-do list, but what is it that I do as a marketer?

In this blog, I hope to illustrate what a day in the life of a marketer at Educater is really like.

6:00am

The dreaded alarm goes off and within minutes my cat Saffron is on the bed purring, demanding cuddles and wants her breakfast.

7:30am

Time to set off for work. It normally takes me around 30-40 minutes depending on the traffic, you never know what the traffic is like on the A63 going across from East Hull to Hessle.

8:00am

After switching on my laptop and monitors, I start making a list of everything that needs to be done for today and the following day, prioritising the important tasks first. At this point, Gill from Customer Service has ever so kindly made a round of drinks – perfect for waking up my brain!

8:30am

After planning for the day, I start looking at the news and social media. I tend to schedule our social media posts for the day along with scrolling through our followers’ posts: liking, sharing and commenting.

I also look through our Google Analytics account to monitor our website visitors for the previous day. I look at traffic (visitor) numbers, the pages viewed, time length of page views and examine the bounce rate – which is the percentage of visitors that enter our website and then leave without taking any action.

9:00am

As part of our marketing strategy to communicate with current and potential customers, email campaigns get scheduled throughout the week. I monitor these on Mailchimp/Mandrill to see how they are performing: the open rate, click rate and the number of leads.

10:00am - 12:00pm

At this point there’s always a meeting or two to attend with the team or external contacts to discuss various things; marketing meetings, development meetings, company briefings. If not, you can find me writing and design email/other campaigns, content writing, designing artwork, keeping our website/the Learning Hub updated or writing plans and reports.

12:00pm - 1:00pm

Lunch and a scroll through social media and the news!

1:00pm - 4:00pm

Back to work. Sometimes I’ll continue with the work I was doing before lunch or start something new. For example, I might update/segment our email lists for the next campaign, carry out market research, attend more meetings or write a SWOT Analysis!

4:30pm

Time to finish today’s tasks and head home.

5:30pm

After tea, I normally watch a bit of TV… sometimes with a BrewDog, and depending on how busy my days been… have a nap!

10:30pm

After watching a bit of TV – my favourite at the moment is House of the Dragon and Bake Off, I start getting things together for the next day and get ready for bed; which of course is when I start thinking about upcoming campaigns, how to reach target audiences and how I want to word an email… good job my phone is close by to write all these down!

Goodnight….

Final Thoughts

Things tend to change day-to-day as a marketer (or Brand Communications Coordinator), one minute you’ll be writing an email, the next you’re putting together a strategy plan, and let’s not forget the other responsibilities such as:

    • Updating the events page
    • Uploading and sharing webinar recordings
    • Communicating with external contacts
    • Scheduling blogs
    • Reviewing and optimising SEO
    • Revising our support material
    • Writing press releases

All-in-all I believe the above schedule is a pretty accurate summary of a recent workday as a marketer at Educater.
